The Connections to College program addresses the lack of opportunities for first generation, college bound students to prepare for college. During the 2010/2011 school year, Bird Street Community Center youth will work with Suffolk University students/mentors every Wednesday starting September 29, 2010 to discus the following topics:
- Admissions requirements for college
- College essays
- SAT prep
- The College Application process
- Importance of Student Activities
- Scholarship/ Financial Aid
- Community Service Learning
- Urban Campus Life
After the youth participate in the workshops led by Suffolk Students and special guest speakers, everyone will have dinner together each Wednesday. Meetings will alternate between Bird Street and Suffolk University. By connecting Boston high school students with Suffolk University students/mentors during the school year, we hope that many youth will start believing they can achieve their goal of pursuing higher education after graduation. Â In addition to our structured curriculum, the program hosts guest speakers and outside presenters on a regular basis.
Participating in Connections to College is a very meaningful experience, both for the youth and the college students. The program invites 30 high school students to participate, along with 7 Suffolk mentors, college officials, faculty, and advisors.
